PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a coating composition presenting a hard coat film having a high refractive index and enhanced in scratch resistance without spoiling various physical properties such as prevention of yellowing through UV ray irradiation, tight adhesiveness and the like. SOLUTION: The method for producing the coating composition is to mix (A) colloidal particles of a modified stannic oxide-zirconium oxide complex having 4.5-60 nm particle size with (B) an organic silicon compound. The colloidal particles of the modified stannic oxide-zirconium oxide complex (A) are produced by coating surfaces of the colloidal particles of the stannic oxide-zirconium oxide complex having 4-50 nm particle size and a structure in which the colloidal particles of stannic oxide prepared by reacting metal tin with an organic acid and hydrogen peroxide bind to colloidal particles of zirconium oxide in a ratio of ZrO<SB>2</SB>/SnO<SB>2</SB>=0.02-1.0 as a core with colloidal particles of tungsten oxide-stannic oxide-silicon dioxide complex having 2-7 nm particle size, 0.1-100 WO<SB>3</SB>/SnO<SB>2</SB>weight ratio and 0.1-100 SiO<SB>2</SB>/SnO<SB>2</SB>weight ratio.
