PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new bacterial strain having an aliphatic hydrocarbon-decomposing activity and a method for decomposing the aliphatic hydrocarbon by using the same. SOLUTION: This new bacterial strain having the activity of decomposing the aliphatic hydrocarbon, especially a straight chain-formed alkane and also a branched chain-formed alkane, and also having a 16S rRNA gene showing≥98% homology to a specific base sequence is provided. The representative strain is a Rhodococcus erythropolis M-13 strain (FERM P-19716). Also, the method for decomposing the aliphatic hydrocarbon comprises a process of bringing the new bacterial strain in contact with a specimen containing the aliphatic hydrocarbon.
