<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an obstacle from being heated by automatically interrupting the forced regeneration of a particulate filter when the obstacle is opposed to an exhaust pipe in the state of the obstacle positioned close to the tip of the exhaust pipe. <P>SOLUTION: The particulate filter 18 carrying an active metal functioning as an oxidation catalyst is installed in the exhaust pipe 16 of the engine 11 of a vehicle, and a fuel is added to exhaust gases in the exhaust pipe 16 by a fuel adding means 19. Also, a distance sensor 26 detecting a distance between the tip of the exhaust pipe 16 and the obstacle 27 opposed to the tip of the exhaust pipe 16 is installed in the vehicle.
