PACKET PROCESSING APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable processing with distinct priority according to classification of a packet, a protocol of a high order layer, etc. when the packet is once converted into an ATM cell and predetermined packet processing is performed.

SOLUTION: The type field of an Ethernet frame received with an Ethernet PIF 11 is scrutinized in a receiving protocol identifying unit 12. If it is an IP packet, an AAL 5 cell processing will be performed by a receiving IP packet converter 13 and an AAL 5 cell processing unit 16. If it is an ARP packet, an OAM cell processing will be performed by a receiving ARP packet converter 14 and an OAM cell processing unit 17. It is transferred to an SAR unit 21 via an SW3. The delivery of the OAM cell using an OAM memory 22 to an ARP packet processing unit 24 is performed in the SAR unit 21 preferentially to the assembling of the AAL 5 packet using the AAL 5 memory 23 and the delivery to an IP packet processing unit 25. Predetermined packet processing to the ARP packet by the ARP packet processing unit 24 is preferentially performed.
