PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character recognizing device for a transparent bottle capable of automatically recognizing an information displaying character added onto a transparent body such as a PET bottle and a glass bottle and capable of promoting the automation of an information display failure inspection to liquid products such as a refreshing drink and traceability of distribution routes. SOLUTION: This character recognizing device for a transparent bottle comprises a lighting system for obliquely radiating lighting beams from under the transparent bottle; a digital camera for obliquely picking up images of the transparent bottle from over the transparent bottle; an image processing means for extracting an information displaying character part of the image data picked up by the digital camera; and a character recognizing means for recognizing corresponding character on the basis of the extracted image data obtained by the image processing means. As an angle of elevation in a peak direction of the lighting beams to be radiated by the lighting system, an angle at 30°-60°is desirable, and as an angle of depression in the optical axial direction of the digital camera, an angle at 15°-45°is desirable.
