PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To press media placed on a placing means not to be shifted in the paper feed direction by disposing a medium pressing means for pressing the uppermost surface of the media placed on the placing means, whereby the media placed on the placing means can be prevented from being shifted in the paper feed direction to prevent paper feeding failure. SOLUTION: This paper feeder includes: a placing means for placing media; a detecting means for detecting the end of the medium placed on the placing means; an elevating means for lifting at least one of the media placed on the placing means after the end of the medium is detected by the detecting means; a supply means for supplying the medium lifted by the elevating means into an image forming apparatus 20; and a medium pressing means for pressing the uppermost surface of the media placed on the placing means.
