PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical engine which can prevent a degradation of oil with a simple means. SOLUTION: A portion 31a of a head cover mounting seat 31, which is located on the side of a rocker arm bracket attachment seat 32, is inwardly concaved toward the rocker arm bracket attachment seat 32 rather than the other portion of the head cover mounting seat 31. As viewed from the top, a back portion 31b of the mounting seat concave portion 31a concaved as mentioned above is so formed as to be inclined with respect to the axial line 34 of a crankshaft. When the engine is inclined to the side where the mounting seat concave portion 31a exists, the back portion 31b of the mounting seat concave portion 31a is arranged to be inclined downward in either of the forward and backward directions.
