摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine enabling lean burn of a very high air/fuel ratio, while avoiding increase in cooling loss. SOLUTION: A main combustion chamber 2 is demarcated by the lower face of a cylinder head 3 and a piston 5. A subsidiary combustion chamber 15 is provided in an ignition device 13 of a main combustion chamber on the side of the cylinder head 3. The ignition device 13 is provided with a bottomed cylindrical main-body 16 and a spark plug 17. The subsidiary combustion chamber 15 is allowed to communicate with the main combustion chamber 2 through a communication hole 18 made in the bottom of the main body 16. A cavity 14 is provided on the crown of the piston 5. In a compression stoke, fuel injected from a fuel injection valve 12 tumbles upward in the cavity 14 to form a stratified mixture. As the piston 5 is moved up, the mixture is pressed into the subsidiary combustion chamber 15, and ignited by the spark plug 17 to be gushed in torch-like flames to the main combustion chamber 2. The flame propagates all over to the mixture. Since the volume of the subsidiary chamber 15 is small, even in the lean mixture, a stable ignition can be attained by a spark of the spark plug 17.
