The lifting column (1) for handling heavy loads, such as a railway wagon, involves two profile braces, the outer of which accommodates the inner. One profile brace is firmly anchored in its position and the other is movable longitudinally relatively to the first. A slide guide is provided between the profile braces. It is formed by platsic blocks. The outer profile brace (2) is formed as a hollow rectangular profile and is that which is anchored. The inner profile brace (3) is formed as a rectangular C-profile.
