<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation plate capable of improving display characteristics of an image display apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The retardation plate comprises a transparent supporting body, at least one alignment layer, a first optical anisotropic layer derived from a discotic liquid crystalline composition thereon, and further, a second optical anisotropic layer derived from a discotic liquid crystalline composition thereon. The first optical anisotropic layer and the second optical anisotropic layer have Re different from each other, with Re defined by formula (1): Re=(nx-ny)×d, wherein (nx) is the refractive index in the direction of a slow phase axis in the layer plane, (ny) is the refractive index in the direction perpendicular to (nx) in the plane, and (d) is the layer thickness. The retardation plate has no face subjected to rubbing treatment to directly control the alignment of the discotic liquid crystalline molecules in the second optical anisotropic layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
