PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oil agent for carbon fiber precursor, effectively suppressing adhesion between single fibers in the spinning process and thereby causing no decrease in operability which decrease caused when using a silicon-based oil agent, and to provide precursor fiber for producing carbon fiber, realizing both of high performance of the carbon fiber and operational stability. SOLUTION: The oil agent for carbon fiber precursor has≤2% silicon content and satisfies 0.15-2 attenuation factor based on the maximum or the relative maximum number measured by free vibration method of the rigid pendulum in the air at 100-145°C. The method for producing precursor fiber for producing carbon fiber comprises adhering the oil agent for carbon fiber precursor to be 0.1-5 wt.% of carbon fiber weight based on dry weight and then drying.
