PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a document regardless of a background while keeping document reading quality. SOLUTION: In a scanner, there is provided on a lower surface of a pressure plate a reflection ratio switching member 12 configured by laminating a background layer 10 having a high reflection ratio and a liquid crystal panel 9 which is switchable into a transmission state of high light transmittance and a non-transmission state of low reflection ratio. When detecting a document P, the liquid crystal panel 9 is turned into non-transmission state and the reflection ratio switching member 12 is turned into state of low reflection ratio as a whole so as to distinguish the document P from the background, and presence/non-presence of the document P is detected by a document detecting sensor 8 that detects reflected light. When reading an image on a reading surface of the document P, the liquid crystal panel 9 is turned into transmission state and the reflection ratio switching member 12 is turned into state of high reflection ratio as a whole so as not to read the area, where the document P is not present, in black.
