<p>#CMT# #/CMT# New compositions (I) contain a combination of the antidandruff active agents acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), zinc pyrithione (ZPT) and piroctone olamine (POA), the contents of each of ASA, ZPT and POA each being 0.01-10.0 (preferably 0.05-5.0) wt. % and the combined content of ASA, ZPT and POA being 0.03-20.0 (preferably 0.5-5.0) wt. % (based on (I) in ready-for-use form). #CMT# : #/CMT# An independent claim is included for the use of (I) in the production of preparations for treating dandruff of the hair. #CMT#ACTIVITY : #/CMT# Antiseborrheic; Fungicide. In plate diffusion tests for activity against Pityrosporum ovale strain CBS 1878, a shampoo formulation containing 1% ASA, 2% ZPT and 0.5% POA gave an inhibition zone of diameter 68 mm, compared with 30.5% for the shampoo without the active agents. #CMT#MECHANISM OF ACTION : #/CMT# None given. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# (I) is used for preventing or reducing dandruff formation, or for eliminating or alleviating dandruff already present, on hair-covered regions of the body (specifically the scalp, beard, axillary or intimate regions) (claimed). #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# The combination of ASA, ZPT and POA has synergistic action against the dandruff-causing yeast fungus Pityrosporum ovale, and is rapidly effective (prophylactically or therapeutically) against dandruff at low concentrations causing no adverse side-effects on the skin or hair. #CMT#PHARMACEUTICALS : #/CMT# Preferred Components: (I) optionally also contains at least one other natural or synthetic chemical or natural antidandruff agent (specifically selected from salicylic acid, sulfur, tar preparations, undecenoic acid derivatives, hinokitiol, or extracts of burdock root, mallow, stinging nettle, walnut shell, birch, willow bark or arnica), at 0.001-10.0 (preferably 0.05-2.0) wt. %. #CMT#ADMINISTRATION : #/CMT# (I) is specifically in the form of a shampoo, showering composition (e.g. gel), gel, tonic, rinse, hair lotion, hair spray, foam, fixing composition, deodorant or shaving lotion (all claimed). #CMT#EXAMPLE : #/CMT# An antidandruff shampoo contained (by weight) 9.8% sodium laureth sulfate, 1.5% cocamidopropyl betaine, 1.0% acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), 2.0% zinc pyrithione (ZPT), 0.5% piroctone olamine (POA), 0.4% perfume, 2.8% sodium chloride, 0.5% preservative and water to 100%. The composition, containing the ternary active agent combination of ASA, ZPT and POA had markedly superior antidandruff activity to comparative compositions containing 1.0% ASA plus 0.5% or 2.0% POA, 1.0% ASA alone, 2.0% POA alone or 2.0% ZPT alone as active agent.</p> |
