A method (300) for a local information processing device having a cache to retrieve at least one data object from a remote information system 240 across a data network comprises the step of requesting, for example from an application (105) operably coupled to the cache (210), a data list from the cache 210. The method further comprises the cache determining that a subset of the objects are contained within the cache (210) and the cache (210) returning the subset number of the objects to the application (105) directly (340, 345). The method further comprises forwarding any remaining object request, where the data object(s) is/are not contained within the cache, to the remote information system to retrieve the remaining data object(s). In this manner, the amount of data sent over the communication network is kept to a minimum. Furthermore, rapid response to the user is provided, by displaying items available from the cache immediately on a communication unit's screen.
