A supporting part(19) of the tile is injection molded(11,15) onto the surface of a prefabricated plate-like upper part(18) which has been preheated(16) to a point above room temperature. The upper part(18) is heated in a tool half(15) of an injection molding tool. Tool cavity dimensions are oversize compared with the outer dimensions of the initially cold upper part. Sensors(20) located near each edge of the cavity produce a signal when the warmed and expanding upper part makes contact with an edge. When all sensors have emitted a signal the heating is halted and plastic is injected to form the supporting part(19). Following the injection stage the tile is removed from the tool and cooled in a press. The supporting part comprises a solid layer adjacent to the upper layer and an open honeycomb structure. Independent claims are included for: a) the process equipment including a heater(16), preferably an infra-red heater, which can be inserted into an open molding tool(11,15) on an injection molding machine and is directed at the tool half(15) having a cavity with dimensions greater than the prefabricated upper part(18) which it holds during heating; b) a plastic tile produced by the process which has a supporting part(19) with edges having projecting connectors and recessed cut-outs. Connectors and cut-outs interlock with each other to connect adjacent tiles and have noses and grooves to prevent disengagement in the tile thickness direction.
|
