A powder having a water-swelling clay mineral laminated thereon, which has particles of a base powder and, laminated on the surface thereof, a first layer containing an ionic molecule having two or more ionic functional groups and, laminated on the first layer, a layer containing a water-swelling clay mineral, characterized in that the layers are continuously laminated in such a manner that the surface and ionic charges of respective layers alternate between positive and negative charges; and a dye-water swelling clay mineral composite, characterized in that it comprises a water-swelling clay mineral and, being intercalated therein, a poly-base and/or a nonionic hydrophilic polymer and a dye. The above powder having a water-swelling clay mineral laminated thereon can be used for imparting a new function to the base powder with ease, since the water-swelling clay mineral is laminated on the base powder with stability; and the above dye-water swelling clay mineral composite is excellent in the resistance of the dye to elution, a light, chlorine and the like, and further is excellent in coloring characteristics and transparency in water and the water resistance of the dye, and thus is significantly useful as a coloring matter for use in an aqueous system.
