A method for applying a coating of a low friction material to either or both of a pair of components that are adapted to slidably engage one another, such as a pair of splined members in a slip joint for use in a vehicular driveshaft assembly. The low friction coating material is preferably formed from a mixture of at least two substances having differing melting temperatures, wherein the first substance (nylon, f or example) has a melting temperature that is lower than the melting temperature of the second substance (polytetrafluoroethylene, for example). Initially, the component is heated to a temperature that is greater than the melting temperature of the first substance, but less than the melting temperature of the second substance. Then, the coating is applied to the heated component by dipping the component into a tank containing the mixture of the first and second substances. The first substance of the coating melts upon contacting the heated component, and adheres to the heate d component. Although the second substance of the coating does not melt, the first substance of the coating carries the second substance of the coating and, thus, supports the second substance of the coating relative to the heated component. The lo w friction coating material can then be cooled and shaped in a die or other mechanism a s desired.
