Practical water-in-water type multicolor coating compositions capable of forming a coating film having excellent surface smoothness; and a method of coating with the coating compositions. One of the water-in- water type multicolor coating compositions is characterized by comprising a matte clear coating material containing a water-compatible resin and a loading pigment having a refractive index of 1.4 to 1.7 and, dispersed in the coating material, at least one kind of flat colored gel particles. The other water-in-water type multicolor coating composition is characterized by comprising a clear coating material containing a water- compatible resin and, dispersed in the coating material, at least one kind of flat colored gel particles, the flat gel particles being a gel derived from a water-compatible resin (a), a coloring pigment (b), water (c), and a reactive compound (d) capable of reacting in the presence of water. Also provided is a method of forming a patterned surface, characterized by applying a colored matte primer coating material on a building as a base to form a primer layer and then applying the water-in- water type multicolor coating composition by roll coating or brush coating to form a topcoat layer.
