PURPOSE: To obtain a new quaternary ammonium salt excellent in biodegradability and useful as a base, etc., of a softening agent. CONSTITUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I [R<1> to R<3> are each a 1-4C alkyl or a hydroxyalkyl; R<4> is a 1-5C alkylene, an alkenylene or a hydroxyalkylene; R<5> is H, a 1-4C alkyl or a hydroxyalkyl; R<6> is a 2-6C alkylene; R<7> and R<8> are each a 7-35C alkyl or an alkenyl; n and m exhibiting average addition molar number of alkylene oxide are each 0-10; X<-> is an anion], e.g. a compound of formula III. Furthermore, the compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III obtained by using an amino alcohol of the formula R<5> NHCH2 CH(OH)CH2 OH as a starting raw material with a quaternizing agent of the formula R<3> -X. |
