A cable splice protector for protecting a downhole connection in a wellbore environment includes an anchor 65 which absorbs axial stress applied to the cable 5. Hence no axial stress is placed on the splices 20a, 20b or on the seals, eg metal to metal seals 30, 41, 50. The protector may be assembled using a jig (210, Fig 4) in which the two cables to be spliced are supported on posts (220A-E) and the halves of the protector slid onto them. The cable may be an electrical cable, a fibre optic or a hydraulic line. |
