PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a varnish composition suitable as especially a publishing gravure printing ink having improved balance between gloss and drying properties of prints without deteriorating transfer properties to paper during printing. SOLUTION: The varnish composition for the printing ink is obtained by adding a polyamide resin to a resin acid metal salt prepared by reacting an unsaturated carboxylic acid-modified rosin composed of rosins andα,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids with two or more kinds of metal compounds in an organic solvent or preadding the polyamide resin to the unsaturated carboxylic acid-modified rosin and then converting the unsaturated carboxylic acid-modified rosin into a metal salt in the organic solvent. The amount of the added polyamide resin is 0.5-10 wt.% based on the solid content of the resin acid metal salt. Since the mixture in which the polyamide resin is added to the resin acid metal salt is used and both the components are added in a specific ratio, the balance between the gloss and the drying properties of the prints can sufficiently be improved without deteriorating the transfer properties to the paper during printing.
