The adjustable steering column for a motor vehicle has at least one control gear and at least one adjustment motor. The steering column can be adjusted via the control gear through the adjustment motor. Curves (1) and (2) show the accelerating and deccelerating revolutions (nv) of the adjustment motor over the given movement path (Sl(mm)) of the steering column. Overloading of the electric wiring system through a blocked motor can be avoided through use of a stepping motor, rendering the adjustment of the steering column more precise.
