Cast iron material with lamellar-, vermicular- or globular graphite formation comprises (wt%) carbon 1.5 - 4.0, silicon 0 - 1.5 and aluminum 0.05 - 2.0, the remainder being iron. An independent claim is included for a method for making the material by adjusting the content of carbon, silicon and aluminum in iron to the specified values.
