PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a selective method for producing a multi-substituted butadiene suitable as a luminescent material. SOLUTION: This selective method for producing a multi-substituted butadiene is provided by reacting two alkene compounds containing an alkene bond and bonded with an organic group containing an atom selected from group 13 to 16 elements of a long period type periodic table and bonded with a second carbon atom of a first and second carbon atoms forming the alkene bond through the atom in the presence of a catalyst containing copper (Cu). It is preferable to have aspects that the catalyst contains further a cesium (Cs)-containing catalyst, the reaction is a homo-coupling reaction, the atom in the alkene compound is any of Si, S, Se, O, Ge, Sn, Pb and B atoms and two of the alkene compounds are the same as each other.
