The amplifier has feed forward and feed back arrangements (FF, FB), in which the feed forward arrangement has a time delay unit (E) e.g. low pass filter. An output power splitter (SPLIT) splits the pump power from a common pump source (PQ) e.g. laser diode, and feeds the splitted power to active channels at an input of one of two amplifier stages. The delay unit compensates the delay due to changes in number of active channels.
