PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal head which can enhance printing quality and a printing speed by enabling temperature control in heating and cooling steps on a heating-element-by-heating-element basis. SOLUTION: The temperatures of the heating elements 11a-11n are detected by thermoelectric transducers 12a-12n which are provided for the individual heating elements 11a-11n, and heating or cooling is forcedly performed for the individual heating elements 11a-11n depending on the result of that detection. This dispenses with the use of a complicated constitution. Since a variation in temperature change of each of the heating elements 11a-11n, which depends on the arrangement positions of the heating elements 11a-11n and which tends to occur in such a case that the temperature of the whole thermal head is controlled, can be suppressed, the printing quality can be enhanced. Additionally, since the temperature change cycle of the heating element itself can be reduced, the printing speed can be made higher. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
