<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat pump water heater capable of quickly rising up hot water with good controllability of hot water temperature. <P>SOLUTION: This heat pump water heater comprises a refrigerant circulating circuit 7 including a compressor 2, a radiator 3, a decompressing means 4, and a heat absorber 5; a heat exchanger 10 including a water passage 9 performing heat exchange with the radiator 3, a water supply pipe 11 supplying tap water to the water passage 9; a hot water supply circuit 13 connected so as to pass water from the water passage 9 to a hot water supplying terminal 12; a water quantity adjusting means adjusting the water quantity of the water passage 9; and a flow detection means 23 detecting the flow rate of the hot water supplying circuit 13. When the flow detection means 23 detects no water quantity and determines stoppage of hot water supply, the water quantity adjusting means is laid to a state in which its opening is narrowed to a predetermined opening.
