PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium processing device which can prevent formatting of a recording medium due to user's operational error, misunderstanding, or the like. SOLUTION: The recording medium processing device is equipped with; a tray 22 on which the recording medium 20 is mounted; a tray drive section 24 which controls carrying-out/carrying-in of the tray 22; and a read/write section 18 which performs recording or formatting of data to the recording medium 20 mounted on the tray 22 of carrying-in status according to received recording or formatting instruction. When a formatting instruction is received, the tray drive section 24 changes the tray 22 into carrying-out status, and a decoder 14 outputs information about a format. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
