PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten times for supplying and discharging a hydraulic oil into an engagement side hydraulic pressure chamber and from a disengagement side hydraulic pressure chamber to shorten times required for the engagement and disengagement of a frictional engagement member by eliminating a conventional restriction (orifice) from an oil supply passage in a hydraulic frictional engagement device of an automatic transmission. SOLUTION: The downstream side of the oil supply passage to which the hydraulic oil is supplied from a hydraulic pressure source is branched at a branch part to form an engagement side oil passage communicating with the engagement side hydraulic pressure chamber and a disengagement side oil passage communicating with the disengagement side hydraulic oil chamber. A pressure regulating valve is interposed on the upstream side of the branch part of the oil supply passage. A selector valve switchable between a first state in which the disengagement side hydraulic oil chamber is allowed to communicate with the oil supply passage and a second state in which the disengagement side hydraulic pressure chamber is allowed to communicate with an oil drain passage and closing a communication part to the oil supply passage by a control means is interposed in the disengagement side oil passage allowing the branch part to communicate with the disengagement side hydraulic pressure chamber.
