PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for calculating traffic information, capable of easily calculating the waiting time for each branching direction and length of respective traffic jams at an intersection on map database, on the basis of vehicle information including respective locations of vehicles and the time on the locations of vehicles. SOLUTION: The traffic information calculating system comprises probe information database 28 for accumulating vehicle information, including respective locations of vehicles and time on the locations of vehicles, a branch-determining section 41 determining the branch direction of a vehicle at an intersection, on the basis of the location of the intersection and the vehicle information at the intersection on the map database 26, and an intersection traffic information calculating section 43 for calculating waiting time for each branching direction or length of traffic jams at the intersection from the vehicle information. Traffic information for each branching direction on an intersection can be calculated with the intersection traffic information calculating section 43, and the accurate traffic information is also obtained at an intersection branched into five routes or more.
