PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plating liquid for forming a platinum-iron alloy film constituting a magnetic recording medium, which has excellent stability and can continuously form a platinum-iron alloy film of high quality, and to provide a plating method. SOLUTION: The plating liquid for forming a platinum-iron alloy film comprises bivalent platinum salt and bivalent iron salt. As the bivalent platinum salt, the one comprising any of Na<SB>2</SB>[Pt(C<SB>2</SB>O<SB>4</SB>)<SB>2</SB>], K<SB>2</SB>[Pt(C<SB>2</SB>O<SB>4</SB>)<SB>2</SB>], [Pt(NH<SB>3</SB>)<SB>4</SB>]Cl<SB>2</SB>, [Pt(NH<SB>3</SB>)<SB>4</SB>]SO<SB>4</SB>, [Pt(NH<SB>3</SB>)<SB>4</SB>](NO<SB>3</SB>)<SB>2</SB>and [Pt(NH<SB>3</SB>)<SB>2</SB>(NO<SB>2</SB>)<SB>2</SB>] and whose content is 1 to 20 g/L by a platinum concentration is preferable. As the bivalent iron salt, the one comprising at least either FeSO<SB>4</SB>or FeCl<SB>2</SB>and whose content is 1 to 40 g/L by an iron concentration is preferable.
