PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a forklift capable of securely putting a pallet and a cargo at predetermined positions without causing collapse of piles of cargo. SOLUTION: Each of a pair of forks 9a, 9b inserted into an insertion port of the pallet for loading and unloading a cargo is attached to a carriage 8 elevating and lowering along masts 7a, 7b in the upward and downward directions U and D through slide mechanisms 10a, 10b, respectively. The slide mechanisms 10a, 10b are composed of guide rails 11a, 11b fixed to the carriage 8, linear motion bearings 13a, 13b composed of carriers 12a, 12b moving along the guide rails 11a, 11b in the upward and downward directions U and D, brackets 14a, 14b fixed to the carriers 12a, 12b, and fork receiving shafts 15a, 15b inserted into bearing holes 16c, 16d provided in the forks 9a, 9b and held on the brackets 14a, 14b.
