PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator safety device that operates an emergency stop device accurately and reliably, can secure the safety of a worker in a pit, constantly mounts an operation body, sets the operation body into the usage state when working in the pit, and does not damage elevator equipment even if resetting is forgotten after the work. SOLUTION: The safety device comprises the emergency stop device 3 provided at an elevator car 1 or a balancing weight, a guide rail 4 for guiding the elevation of the car or the balancing weight, and the operation body 5 rotatably provided at the guide rail 4 of a hoistway pit section 6. The operation body is normally retained in a vertical state in parallel with the guide rail, is rotated when working in the pit and is fixed in a horizontal state orthogonally crossing the guide rail, and operates the emergency stop device when the car or the balancing weight is lowered.
