[PROBLEMS] To provide a photocatalyst capable of utilizing not only an ultraviolet light, but also a visible light, to use the photocatalyst in the decomposition treatment of a harmful chemical in a gas phase or a liquid phase, and to provide a means for converting a harmful material into a harmless one by the use of the photocatalyst. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A photocatalyst which comprises a composite oxide semiconductor represented by the general formula: BaBixOy [wherein x and y are 0.5 < x <2, and 2.5 < y < 4] as a catalyst component; and a method for decomposing and removing a harmful material which comprises using the photocatalyst.
