<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical/digital converter which has simple circuit configuration and whose cost is reduced. <P>SOLUTION: With regard to conversion of light intensity to digital signal, the current output of a photodiode representing light intensity is converted to a voltage and provided as one input to a comparator. A sawtooth generator feeds the signal to the other input of the comparator. The output of the comparator is a pulse width modulated (PWM) digital signal where the pulse width is proportional to light intensity.
