<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ferromagnetic metal powder having high orientation and a small particle size and a magnetic recording medium excellent in electromagnetic conversion characteristics with high output. <P>SOLUTION: The ferromagnetic metal powder contains a metal taking iron as a chief ingredient and an oxide film disposed on the surface of the metal. The axial ratio of the metal of the ferromagnetic metal powder is 6.0 to 8.0, the square ratio (SQ) of the ferromagnetic metal powder is ≥0.520, an average major axis length is 30 to 60 nm, and saturated magnetization σs is 90 to 130 A m<SP>2</SP>/kg.
