摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently compensate aberration in an optical pickup which is furnished with a liquid crystal panel for aberration compensation, by setting an appropriate bias voltage. <P>SOLUTION: An aberration compensating apparatus includes the optical pickup furnished with the liquid crystal panel for compensating the aberration of a ray which is emitted from a light source section and with which a recording medium is irradiated, and a control section applying the bias voltage to the liquid crystal panel for compensating the aberration. The bias voltage is set to such a voltage that a diffraction generating in the ray passing through an electrode gap section between electrode sections of the liquid crystal panel becomes minimum. For example, the bias voltage is set to such a voltage that a phase difference between the ray passing through the electrode sections of the liquid crystal panel and the ray passing through the electrode gap section becomes integral multiple of a wavelength of the ray.
