PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a recording and reproducing apparatus easy to use for respective users in a use situation, in which the recording and reproducing apparatus recording animation/voice data or the like using a large capacity recording medium, such as a disk or a semiconductor memory is used by a plurality of users. SOLUTION: An ID number is decided for each user, when the recording and reproducing apparatus is used by a plurality of users, a recorded program is related to the ID number, further, recordable data quantity of each user and recordable data quantity of common environment are previously decided. When the ID number is inputted directly after applying a power source, only program relating to the ID number is displayed on a program selection screen. Also, a plurality of buttons of the apparatus body and a remote controller are pressed as an input means of the ID number, or remote controllers of the number of users are provided.
