PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome the problems of a conventional line drawing instrument occurring when strings wound on a reel are wound out: the strings cannot be smoothly wound out due to entanglement thereof; the strings are cut due to excessive straining thereof; the strings are in mesh with each other so that they cannot be wound out: and to provide a new line drawing instrument which can wind strings on a winding drum of a reel by laterally reciprocating the string, wherein reciprocating operation is implemented by a very simple mechanism. SOLUTION: According to the structure of the line drawing instrument, the reel 2 for winding thereon the string 3 is rotatably arranged in a case 1, and the string 3 wound on the reel 2 passes a chalk chamber 4 housing marking chalk therein. Herein the reel 2 which is guided to the outside of the case 1 has a string oscillating spindle 6a arranged in a front stage thereof, and a Z-crank-shaped string oscillating portion 6c formed on the string oscillating spindle 6a is rotated while making contact with the string 3, and thus the string 3 is wound on the winding drum 2b of the reel 2 while oscillating toward both ends of the winding drum 2b of the reel 2.
