PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain excellent display characteristics, by improving the nonuniformity of electric lines of force along the thickness of a liquid crystal cell in an electrooptical device which drives a liquid crystal material by applying an electric field in parallel with a substrate. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal electrooptical device having a liquid crystal material sandwiched in between a couple of light-transmissive substrates 101 and 102 has, on one substrate 101, a switching element 111, a drain electrode 115 for driving the liquid crystal material, a common electrode 107, and a gate electrode 105, and applies an electric field parallel to the substrate between the drain electrode and the common electrode. On the other substrate 102, elements and respective electrodes, such as a drain electrode 116 and a common electrode 108, are formed and an electric field parallel to the substrate is applied by the electrodes on the couple of substrates to drive the liquid crystal material. Further, the electric field between the drain electrode 115 and common electrode 107 is smoothed with the electric field produced between the drain electrode 116 and common electrode 108.
