PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protective tape detecting method which enables a more efficient detection of a protective tape, a protective tape detector, a battery manufacturing method superior productivity using the protective tape detecting method, and to provide a battery manufacturing apparatus. SOLUTION: The protective tape detecting method for detecting the protective tape bonded to the surface of a substrate has a process (i) for irradiating the substrate with a light of wavelength, which is absorbed by a material contained in the protective tape, after a process of bonding the protective tape to the surface of the substrate; a process (ii) of detecting the characteristics of the first reflected light, which is reflected, by at least one of the substrate and the protective tape, of the irradiated light and a process (iii) of detecting the protective tape, by comparing the characteristics of the first reflected light with the characteristics of the reflected light (second reflected light) of the light of the wavelength, to the substrate itself.
