PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily set an appropriate threshold by efficiently proceeding a user's teaching work. SOLUTION: A display section 21 and an operation section 22 are provided on the upper surface of an amplifier section 2 in a proximity switch. During a mode for setting a threshold for object detection, a CPU inside the amplifier section 2 samples the predetermined number of measurements in accordance with a first teaching operation and determines a variation width between an average measured value and the measured values. Until performing a second teaching operation, processing for determining tolerance of a measurement at a current time point with respect to a measurement at the point of time of the first teaching operation, and processing for displaying the calculated tolerance on the display section 21, are repeated.
