PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data compression apparatus for compressing data such as image data the compression rate of which is enhanced. SOLUTION: The data compression apparatus obtains a difference between adjacent numerical values in consecutive numerical values configuring data to be compressed and codes only a particular numerical value "YY" among the numerical values appearing in the difference data. In the case of carrying out coding, coding representing a consecutive number Z whose number of bits differs depending on whether the consecutive number Z of the numeral "YY" is Z<128 or Z≥128 is carried out.
