PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve responsiveness in lowering a compression ratio in an internal combustion engine changing the compression ratio by displacing a cylinder block with respect to a crankcase. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinder groups is provided with a variable compression ratio mechanism for changing the position of the cylinder block with respect to the crankcase for every cylinder group. When it is necessary to quickly lower the compression ratio like the case of accelerating from a low-medium load operation region, the compression ratio of at least one cylinder group out of the plurality of cylinder groups is lowered to a predetermined compression ratio earlier than the other cylinder groups to heighten engine output in an early stage.
