A steel sheet for a fuel tank, which has an electrolytic Zn-Ni alloy plating layer containing 5 to 30 mass % of nickel and being plated at least one surface of the sheet in an amount of 1 to 40 g/m<2>, and a chromate coating film formed on the electrolytic Zn-Ni alloy plating layer, and exhibits a performance capability that after the steel sheet is immersed in a boiling water for 30 minutes, the change of the amount of Cr attached in the chromate coating film is 2 % or less. The above steel sheet exhibits excellent corrosion resistance for a fuel such as gasoline, alcohol, or an alcohol-mixed gasoline for a long period of time, and thus is suitable for a gasoline tank of an automobile, an automatic bicycle or the like.
