<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device in which fixing performance is improved while phenomena, such as paper blister and toner blister, caused by evaporation of moisture, etc., in transfer paper are prevented. <P>SOLUTION: In the fixing device in which an endless belt-like fixing member stretched by a plurality of rolls and having a heat source is brought into pressurized contact with the surface of the fixing member having a heat source, and a transfer material having an unfixed toner image held on it is passed through the pressurized contact part of the fixing member and the pressurized contact part of the endless belt-like fixing member with the fixing member, thereby fixing the unfixed toner image under heat and pressure, a contact separation means is provided for bringing the fixing member and the endless belt into contact with each other and separating them. In addition, at least one of the rolls stretching the endless belt from inside is a pressure roll that is in pressurized contact with the fixing member. A means for detecting the temperature of the pressure roll is provided.
