<p>C5- 8 olefins are oligomerized in the liquid phase in the presence of a synthetic petroleum cracking catalyst, the conversion of the olefin being maintained at a constant level by progressively raising the reaction temperature, and the catalyst being periodically regenerated. The space velocity of the liquid olefin is preferably below 3 vols./vol. of catalyst/hour, and the conversion of olefin per pass is preferably less than 30%, the starting temperature being adjusted accordingly (e.g. 50-150 DEG C.), and unconverted olefin being recycled. Suitable catalyst are silica/alumina, silica/magnesia, silica/zirconia, silica/boria, or any of these plus a transition metal oxide, e.g. nickel oxide. The process is illustrated with reference to the dimerization of a mixture of n-hexenes, a typical progressive temperature rise (Example 1) being from 67 DEG to 130 DEG C. over a period of 95 hours.</p> |
