<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the fuel electrode side from lacking hydrogen during stoppage of a fuel cell stack, and to prevent the oxidizer electrode side from being set at a high potential and deteriorated by corrosion. <P>SOLUTION: This operation method of a fuel cell stack comprises: a power generation process for generating power by the fuel cell stack by introducing a hydrogen-rich fuel 40 to the fuel electrode side of the fuel cell stack 6 and by introducing an oxidizer 32 to the oxidizer electrode side of the fuel cell stack; a first atmosphere keeping process for keeping the fuel electrode side in a hydrogen-rich atmosphere; and a stopping process for stopping the power generation by the fuel cell stack after a first atmosphere change process for setting the oxidizer electrode side in an oxygen-lacking atmosphere.
