PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an intermediate unit with an excavating mechanism used for simply constructing a large-sectional tunnel having various sizes without remodeling a machine body unit such as a shield machine and changing the shape of a cutter on the front of a machine and a method for assembling an excavator. SOLUTION: The rotary type excavator 9 is installed inside a cylindrical skin plate 17, and the intermediate unit 5 with the excavating mechanism is formed. A machine body unit 3a and the machine body unit 3d and the machine body unit 3b and the machine body unit 3c are connected on both sides of the skin plate 17 for the intermediate unit 5 with the excavating mechanism respectively. The rear end sections of the intermediate unit 5 and the machine body unit 3 are connected to the skin plate 21.
