Object locating system for vehicles to recognize lane change

The system has a detecting device including a status recorder (46) that assigns a position for an object entering a lane with respect to a transverse position of the object from preset positions. The assigning of position is updated repeatedly based on new detection data. The transverse position and object velocity are tracked to compensate for the lack of information on object width for defining the position change.
